Mumbai schools, colleges shut as IMD issues red alert for heavy downpour

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai on Saturday, July 4, as the city prepares for extremely heavy rainfall that is expected to batter the region throughout the day. In response to the severe weather warning, educational authorities have decided to close schools and colleges for the afternoon session as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The decision to shut down educational institutions was made following consultations between the IMD and civic officials who assessed the severity of the incoming weather system. Authorities have characterised the expected rainfall as intense and potentially dangerous, prompting them to advise residents across the city and its suburbs to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors during the period of heaviest precipitation.

Meteorologists have warned that Mumbai will experience not just torrential rain but also gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 60 kilometres per hour. Additionally, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and other civic bodies have issued a high tide warning for coastal areas, cautioning residents living near the shoreline to take extra precautions. The combination of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and tidal surge creates a potentially hazardous situation for residents, particularly in low-lying areas and informal settlements that are vulnerable to flooding.

City authorities have urged all residents to monitor official updates from the IMD and civic bodies regularly to stay informed about the evolving weather situation. The decision to close the afternoon session of schools and colleges reflects the administration's commitment to prioritising public safety over routine activities. Citizens have been advised to remain indoors, secure loose items that could be blown away by strong winds, and keep emergency contact numbers readily available.

Mumbai residents are also encouraged to avoid venturing out for non-essential work and to postpone travel plans if possible. The weather alert underscores the increasing frequency of severe weather events affecting the financial capital and the importance of preparedness among citizens and authorities alike.
