Delhi Police Bust Massive Expired Food Fraud Racket, Seize Rs 20 Lakh Stock

Delhi authorities have dismantled a sophisticated food fraud operation that involved tampering with expiry dates on expired products from well-known brands. Police seized stockpiles valued at over Rs 20 lakh during raids, exposing a dangerous scheme that posed serious health risks to unsuspecting consumers across the capital.

The accused operators obtained products nearing or past their expiration dates at significantly discounted rates from suppliers. Using chemical thinners, they systematically removed original manufacturing and expiry date markings, making the compromised items appear fresh and recently produced. The doctored products were then reintroduced into the market at standard retail prices, generating substantial illicit profits.

This type of food safety violation represents a major public health concern, as expired products can harbor harmful bacteria and toxins. Such rackets typically target budget-conscious consumers and small retail outlets that may lack stringent quality verification systems. The scheme underscores vulnerabilities in supply chain monitoring and retail oversight across urban markets.

The bust highlights the growing threat of food adulteration and tampering in metropolitan areas. Authorities are intensifying inspections at wholesale markets and retail outlets to prevent similar operations. Consumers are advised to carefully inspect packaging, verify batch numbers, and purchase from authorized dealers to avoid counterfeit or compromised products.

Investigations are underway to identify additional distribution networks and retailers involved in selling the tampered products. The Delhi Police has urged the public to report suspicious food sales and manufacturing practices to prevent further health hazards in the community.
