Mumbai Schools, Colleges Shut as IMD Issues Red Alert for Extreme Rainfall

Mumbai braced for severe weather on July 4 as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall across the city. In response to the escalating weather threat, educational institutions across Mumbai have been directed to suspend afternoon classes, forcing thousands of students and staff to alter their schedules.

The red alert classification indicates the most serious level of weather warning, signalling dangerous conditions that pose significant risks to public safety. Municipal authorities and school administrations acted swiftly to implement the closure order, prioritising the wellbeing of students and staff who would otherwise face hazardous commuting conditions. The decision affects schools and colleges citywide, disrupting academic calendars and forcing parents to make last-minute arrangements for childcare and supervision.

The weather system threatening Mumbai has already delivered substantial rainfall to various parts of the city, with meteorological forecasts predicting the intensity will persist throughout the day. The IMD warned of additional hazards beyond rainfall alone—strong gusty winds are expected to accompany the downpour, potentially causing structural damage, uprooted trees, and dangerous flying debris. Compounding these challenges, the city faces the risk of high tides, which could lead to flooding in low-lying coastal and waterfront areas, particularly in vulnerable neighbourhoods near the Arabian Sea.

Authorities have advised all Mumbai residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel unless facing genuine emergencies. This guidance applies to commuters, office-goers, and the general public, as venturing outdoors during such severe weather increases the risk of accidents, electrocution from downed power lines, and injury from flying objects. The closure of afternoon school sessions reflects the seriousness of these warnings and the government's commitment to preventing weather-related casualties.

Civic agencies and disaster management teams have been placed on high alert, with emergency response units positioned across the city to handle potential flooding, landslides, and other weather-related emergencies. Residents have been urged to stock essentials, charge mobile devices, and stay updated through official weather alerts and news channels. The IMD is expected to provide regular updates as the weather system progresses, with the red alert status subject to revision based on actual conditions throughout the day.
