Heavy downpour exceeding 200 mm causes waterlogging and traffic chaos across Mumbai

Mumbai experienced significant urban disruptions on Wednesday following a heavy rainfall event that dumped over 200 millimetres of water across various parts of the city, creating widespread waterlogging and severely hampering traffic movement throughout the metropolitan area.

The intense downpour led to inundation of major roads and residential areas, with rainwater accumulating in low-lying zones and catching commuters and residents off guard. The rainfall intensity disrupted the usual flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, leaving many stranded on roads and forcing lengthy delays across the city's road network.

The Indian Meteorological Department had issued rainfall warnings for the region, though the intensity and volume exceeded initial forecasts for several localities. Multiple residential areas reported water seeping into ground-floor apartments and shops, affecting commercial establishments. Drainage systems in several parts of the city appeared overwhelmed by the sudden deluge, unable to cope with the volume of water accumulating on streets within a short timeframe.

Public transport services, including buses and autorickshaws, faced severe operational challenges as drivers navigated through waterlogged stretches. Commuters reported significantly longer travel times, with some journeys taking double the usual duration. Several traffic signals malfunctioned due to water damage, further complicating vehicular movement and creating congestion at key intersections across the city.

Municipal authorities urged residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall periods. Civic officials advised citizens to report waterlogging in their respective areas to enable swift drainage clearance operations. The civic administration's drainage wing deployed teams to clear blocked storm water drains and remove debris obstructing water flow in vulnerable zones.

Weather forecasts indicate that rainfall activity may continue in the coming days, prompting authorities to remain on high alert. Residents have been advised to keep emergency numbers handy and ensure their homes are protected against water ingress. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation has appealed to citizens to report critical drainage issues immediately for prompt intervention.
