Power outage hits Gamdevi and Grant Road for 90 minutes

A 90-minute power outage struck central Mumbai on Wednesday, leaving residents and businesses without electricity across Gamdevi and Grant Road. The blackout affected both residential and commercial establishments in these densely populated neighbourhoods, forcing residents to rely on backup power sources and natural light.

The outage was part of scheduled maintenance work being conducted by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking. The utility company had announced the planned power cut to carry out essential infrastructure repairs and system upgrades in the area. Officials from BEST had issued prior notification to residents, though the disruption still inconvenienced thousands across the two localities.

Gamdevi and Grant Road, located in Mumbai's central business district, are home to thousands of residents, offices, educational institutions, and retail establishments. The extended blackout meant that traffic signals in the area were non-functional for the duration, potentially affecting vehicular movement during peak hours. Schools and offices struggled to maintain operations without reliable power supply, forcing staff to suspend work-dependent activities.

The power cut highlighted the city's ongoing challenges with aging electrical infrastructure in older, densely populated neighbourhoods. Many residents complained about the lack of adequate advance notice and questioned the timing of such maintenance work during business hours. The outage also raised concerns about the reliability of backup power systems in hospitals and critical facilities operating in these areas.

BEST officials stated that the maintenance work was essential for preventing future breakdowns and ensuring stable power supply to the region. Engineers conducted system diagnostics and replaced aging components during the scheduled window. The utility company has urged residents to report any irregularities in power supply and assured them of improved service reliability following these upgrades.

The restoration of power to both areas was completed as planned, with supply normalising by late afternoon. BEST has advised residents to report any related issues and requested patience as such maintenance activities remain necessary for long-term grid stability.
