Thane commuters demand expanded rail services to outer suburbs
Residents in areas beyond Thane are pushing for better railway connectivity as overcrowding worsens on existing lines. Local groups say improved services are essential to ease congestion and support growing populations.
Commuters living in areas beyond Thane are intensifying calls for expanded and improved railway services to connect outer suburban regions with central Mumbai, as existing infrastructure struggles to handle rising passenger demand.
The push comes as residents from localities beyond Thane express frustration over limited train options, overcrowded platforms, and long waiting times. Commuter groups and resident associations have renewed their appeal to Western Railway authorities and state officials, urging them to prioritise rail expansion projects that would extend connectivity to these underserved areas. The residents argue that better services would reduce travel time, ease congestion on current lines, and support the region's growing population.
Thane has historically served as a major junction on Mumbai's Western Railway corridor, connecting the city to Kalyan, Dombivli, and beyond. However, areas further out—including towns in Palghar district and surrounding regions—lack adequate rail infrastructure. Commuters say they are forced to rely on crowded buses, personal vehicles, or long journeys on existing trains. The situation has worsened as housing developments and industrial growth have expanded populations in these outer zones, but transportation networks have not kept pace.
Local leaders and commuter associations have submitted memorandums to railway officials and government representatives, highlighting the economic and social impact of poor connectivity. They point out that improved rail links would benefit workers, students, and businesses by reducing commute times and operational costs. Additionally, better services could ease pressure on inner suburban lines that currently handle more than their intended capacity.
Railway officials have acknowledged the demands but cited budget constraints and ongoing projects as challenges. The Western Railway continues to evaluate proposals for new routes and service expansions, though no concrete timelines have been announced. Meanwhile, commuters say the delay in addressing these needs is pushing residents toward private transport, further worsening road congestion and pollution across the region.
