Activist Wangchuk's Health Deteriorates on Day 7 of Hunger Strike
Sonam Wangchuk loses 5kg as blood pressure and sugar levels drop during protest demanding minister's resignation.
Sonam Wangchuk, the renowned education activist, continues his hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, entering his seventh consecutive day without food. Medical reports indicate his physical condition is deteriorating rapidly, with a loss of over five kilograms and concerning drops in both blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
The protest, being staged at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, has become a focal point for activism against irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Political figures and civil society representatives have begun showing solidarity with Wangchuk's cause. Abhijeet Dipke of the Cockroach Janata Party visited the protest site, urging the government to respond to the activist's demands and calling for increased public participation.
Wangchuk's hunger strike stems from widespread concerns about examination malpractices and systemic flaws in India's medical entrance examination system. The NEET irregularities have sparked significant controversy, affecting thousands of aspiring medical students across the country. His decision to undertake such an extreme form of protest reflects the gravity with which he views these institutional failures.
The movement has expanded beyond individual activism, drawing support from various quarters including opposition leaders, education experts, and student organizations. The growing momentum suggests this has become more than a personal demand—it represents broader discontent with educational governance in India.
Medical experts accompanying Wangchuk have warned that prolonged hunger strikes pose serious health risks. As his vital signs continue declining, pressure is mounting on authorities to engage in dialogue or address the core issues he has raised. The coming days will be critical as both his health and the government's response remain uncertain.
