Worker dies from electric shock at Ulwe construction site; FIR filed against developer partners

A construction worker lost his life in a fatal electrocution incident at an under-construction residential building in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Noor Salaam Mohsin, 45, was struck by an unsecured live electrical wire that had been dangerously routed across a kitchen window grille at the site. Mohsin, who was residing at the construction premises along with his wife, came into contact with the exposed wire while working, resulting in instant electrocution.

Following the death, the Ulwe police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against four individuals under negligence charges. The accused include two partners of Kuber Construction, the developer firm managing the project, along with the site supervisor and an electrical engineer or contractor hired for the electrical work. The FIR was filed after an initial investigation revealed gross safety violations and lack of proper precautions at the building site.

The incident highlights persistent safety lapses in Mumbai's construction industry, where workers continue to face hazardous working conditions. The exposed live wire arrangement at the kitchen window was a clear deviation from standard electrical installation protocols. Experts have pointed out that such carelessly installed wiring systems pose immediate risks to workers on-site. The fact that the wire had not been properly insulated or secured in a safe conduit demonstrates a complete disregard for workplace safety standards.

The death of Mohsin has raised serious concerns about construction site safety in Navi Mumbai's rapidly developing areas like Ulwe. Many labourers on such projects live on-site in makeshift arrangements, making them vulnerable to electrical hazards, falls, and other occupational dangers. This incident is likely to trigger renewed scrutiny from Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and labour department officials.

The state labour department is expected to conduct a detailed investigation into safety compliance at the site. Regulatory authorities may issue notices to Kuber Construction and demand implementation of stricter safety measures across all their active projects. The case also serves as a reminder for construction companies to prioritize worker safety, ensure proper training for electrical contractors, and maintain regular safety audits on active construction sites.
