Germany Tightens Sick Leave Rules to Revive Struggling Economy

Germany is overhauling its sick leave system as part of a broader economic recovery strategy to reverse its sluggish growth trajectory. Beginning next year, employees will be required to obtain medical certification from their first day of illness, eliminating the current practice where workers can self-certify absences through telephone calls. This represents a fundamental shift in how the country manages workplace health and attendance.

The German government views the policy change as essential to tackling persistently high absence rates that officials believe are dragging down economic performance. By requiring immediate doctor's visits, policymakers hope to increase productivity and reduce the financial burden on employers and the state healthcare system. The reform is part of Chancellor's broader agenda to reinvigorate Europe's largest economy, which has been struggling with sluggish growth in recent quarters.

However, the measure has encountered significant resistance from labour unions and medical associations. Trade unions argue that the requirement imposes unnecessary administrative burdens on workers and may discourage people from seeking proper medical attention due to inconvenience and costs. Medical professionals have raised concerns about overwhelming doctor's offices with non-emergency visits and potentially straining healthcare resources.

The policy reflects Germany's determination to address structural economic challenges that have earned it the unflattering designation of Europe's "sick man." Officials believe stricter attendance monitoring will restore competitiveness, though critics contend the approach prioritizes productivity over worker welfare and public health considerations. The implementation is expected to face continued opposition as stakeholders debate the balance between economic efficiency and employee protections during the transition period.
