Mumbai battered by heaviest monsoon rainfall; two hurt, streets flooded

Mumbai faced its fiercest monsoon downpour of the season on Monday as heavy rainfall battered the city and surrounding areas, leaving two people injured and causing significant disruptions across urban neighbourhoods. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad in anticipation of the severe weather system.

Between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, the IMD's Santacruz observatory—the city's primary weather monitoring station—recorded 108 millimetres of rainfall. This substantial precipitation marked the heaviest single-day downpour witnessed so far during the monsoon season. In contrast, the Colaba area received 30 millimetres during the same period, indicating the uneven distribution of rainfall across different parts of the metropolitan region.

The relentless rain caused widespread waterlogging across Mumbai's streets and low-lying areas. Multiple road networks became inundated, disrupting traffic flow and forcing commuters to navigate through flooded passages. Public transport services faced delays as drivers exercised caution on water-logged routes. The heavy downpour also affected daily life, with residents forced to remain indoors or exercise extreme caution while venturing out.

The two injuries reported during the downpour underscore the dangers posed by severe weather conditions. While specific details about the incidents remain limited, they highlight the risks monsoon rains pose to the city's residents, whether through accidents related to waterlogging, falling debris, or other weather-related hazards.

The orange alert issued by IMD for Mumbai and neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad served as an official warning about the severe weather ahead. Such alerts are meant to prepare residents and authorities for potential disruptions and to enable precautionary measures.

As the monsoon season continues, Mumbai residents are advised to remain vigilant about weather updates and take necessary precautions during heavy rainfall spells. Authorities typically monitor flood-prone areas and deploy emergency services to manage any critical situations that emerge during such weather events.
