Orange alert issued for Mumbai as heavy monsoon rains lash city and three districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad under an orange alert as heavy monsoon rainfall continues to batter the region, with predictions of more intense downpours in the coming period.
The island city of Mumbai recorded 114 millimetres of rainfall within a 24-hour window, while suburban areas also experienced substantial precipitation. The orange alert—indicating the possibility of moderate to intense rain spells—has prompted civic authorities and disaster management agencies to remain on high alert across all four districts.
The heavy downpours are part of the ongoing monsoon season, which typically brings significant rainfall to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and surrounding areas from June through September. The weather system affecting the region has intensified over the past day, leading meteorologists to upgrade the alert status. Authorities have been monitoring rainfall patterns closely to assess the impact on drainage systems, traffic movement, and vulnerable populations in low-lying areas.
Civic officials have advised Mumbai residents to exercise caution during the period of heavy rainfall. Residents have been warned to avoid venturing into waterlogged areas, remain vigilant on roads during commute, and secure loose objects that could be blown away by strong winds accompanying the rain. Additionally, authorities have flagged the possibility of high tidal conditions, which could compound flooding risks in coastal areas and low-lying neighbourhoods.
The alert comes as the city's drainage and stormwater management systems prepare to handle the anticipated volume of water. Municipal Corporation of Mumbai teams have been positioned to respond swiftly to any flooding or waterlogging complaints. Disaster management teams across Thane, Palghar, and Raigad have similarly been placed on standby to assist residents in affected areas.
