Man arrested for defrauding family of Rs 9.4 lakh with fake cricket squad promise

Mumbai Police have registered a case against an unidentified man accused of defrauding a teenager and his family of Rs 9.4 lakh by falsely promising selection into an under-14 cricket squad. The complaint was filed after the accused disappeared following the money transfer, leaving the family out of pocket and without any promised opportunities for the young cricketer.

The victim's family approached police after the accused, who claimed to have connections with cricket selection committees, failed to deliver on his promises. The man had convinced the teenager and his parents that he could secure a spot for the boy in a prestigious under-14 cricket team in exchange for the hefty sum. Trust in his assurances led the family to part with Rs 9.4 lakh over time, believing they were investing in their son's sporting future.

The accused employed a classic fraud scheme commonly used against aspiring athletes and their families. He provided false documentation and credentials to appear credible, claiming access to selection panels and training programs. He maintained contact with the family through calls and meetings, extracting money in phases under various pretexts such as registration fees, training costs, and administrative charges. Once sufficient funds were collected, the man severed all contact and became untraceable.

The family's ordeal highlights a growing pattern of sports-related fraud in India, where unscrupulous individuals exploit the dreams and aspirations of young athletes and their parents. Cricket, being India's most popular sport, frequently attracts such fraudsters who misuse the sport's appeal and the genuine desire of parents to nurture their children's talents.

Mumbai Police have begun investigation into the case and are working to identify and locate the accused. Authorities have advised parents and guardians to verify credentials independently before engaging with anyone claiming to offer spots in official sports teams or academies. They recommend cross-checking claims directly with legitimate cricket associations and boards rather than relying on individual intermediaries.

This incident serves as a cautionary tale for families seeking to advance their children's cricket careers, emphasizing the importance of due diligence and verification before committing large sums of money.
