Navi Mumbai cuts 7,000 trees ahead of monsoon as safety hazard
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has pruned 7,000 trees before the monsoon season arrives. Over 100 trees were felled during the drive to prevent storm damage and ensure public safety.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has completed a large-scale tree pruning operation ahead of the monsoon season, removing and trimming 7,000 trees across the city. As part of the drive, more than 100 trees were felled entirely to eliminate safety risks during heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The corporation undertook this preventive maintenance work to reduce the possibility of branches and trees falling on residents, vehicles, and infrastructure during the upcoming monsoon months. Officials at the NMMC identified weak, diseased, and damaged trees that posed a threat to public safety and decided they needed to be removed before the heavy rainfall began.
The tree-felling operation was carried out systematically across different areas of Navi Mumbai. Workers removed trees that were dangerously leaning, had hollow trunks, or were heavily diseased and beyond recovery. The pruning work involved trimming branches that overhung roads, power lines, and residential areas. The NMMC coordinated with various departments to ensure the operation did not disrupt traffic or essential services during the process.
During monsoon season, strong winds and waterlogged soil weaken tree roots, making branches more likely to break and trees more prone to uprooting. By removing hazardous trees before the rains arrive, the corporation aims to prevent accidents and reduce emergency calls during monsoon. The felled trees were disposed of responsibly, with some wood being recycled for other municipal purposes where possible.
Residents of Navi Mumbai are expected to see improved safety on roads and residential areas during the upcoming monsoon. The NMMC has emphasized that the pruning exercise is part of its routine maintenance to protect the city's population from weather-related disasters. Officials stated that similar preventive measures would be conducted annually before the monsoon season to maintain public safety across the municipal corporation's jurisdiction.
