Government Directs Removal of Battery Apps Blocking E-Rickshaw Operations

The Indian government has ordered the removal of three battery management applications that have been used to remotely disable electric rickshaws, according to official sources. These apps, designed ostensibly for fleet management and battery monitoring, had become tools for operators to halt vehicles remotely, creating operational chaos in the e-rickshaw sector.

The decision comes after repeated complaints from e-rickshaw operators and aggregators who reported losing control of their vehicles through these applications. The apps allowed third parties to lock or disable battery functions, effectively immobilizing rickshaws and preventing drivers from earning their daily wages. Multiple state governments and the central government received petitions highlighting the misuse of this technology.

The e-rickshaw industry has grown significantly across Indian cities as a sustainable transportation solution. However, the lack of regulatory oversight on third-party apps managing critical vehicle functions created vulnerabilities. These battery management systems were supposed to optimize charging schedules and monitor health metrics, but were being exploited for commercial disputes and competitive sabotage.

This government intervention protects thousands of e-rickshaw drivers and small fleet operators who depend on these vehicles for their livelihood. The removal order ensures that critical vehicle functions cannot be remotely compromised by unauthorized parties. It also sends a message that technology misuse in the gig economy will not be tolerated.

Authorities are now pushing for standardized, transparent battery management systems that prioritize driver safety and operational continuity. The government may establish new guidelines requiring manufacturer-approved apps only, with built-in safeguards against unauthorized remote access. This move is expected to restore confidence among operators considering the e-rickshaw business.
