Bhopal Hospitals Accused of Fraud Under Ayushman Bharat Scheme

A large-scale fraud has been uncovered in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, where several private hospitals have been accused of claiming higher reimbursements under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme by showing treatment for diseases different from those actually suffered by patients.

The alleged malpractice involves hospitals collecting patients' Aadhaar details and biometrics without explaining the purpose and later raising claims under the scheme without their knowledge.

In one such case, Shyam Kumar approached RA Stone and Surgical Care in Bhopal for treatment of piles. However, after the procedure, he received a message stating that ₹84,260 had been deducted from his Ayushman account, and his discharge papers showed that he had undergone surgery for kidney stones instead of piles.

Shyam lodged a complaint on the CM Helpline and later consulted a local doctor, who confirmed that the hospital records were incorrect. The hospital management denied any wrongdoing, stating that patients should approach the hospital administration directly with any grievances.

Another case surfaced against Meena Fracture Hospital in Narmadapuram, where Rekha Ahirwar visited for fracture treatment but later alleged that the hospital claimed reimbursement for procedures unrelated to her actual condition.

The hospital billed for two surgeries under the Ayushman scheme, leading to a substantial deduction from her insurance cover. Rekha and her husband filed complaints before the Jansunwai and the chief medical and health officer (CMHO), who found the hospital guilty of negligence in treatment as well as financial irregularities and fraud under the Ayushman scheme.

The Ayushman Bharat Scheme is a government-funded health insurance scheme that aims to provide affordable healthcare to economically vulnerable families. However, the alleged malpractice by private hospitals in Bhopal has raised concerns about the scheme's effectiveness and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such fraud.

The Madhya Pradesh government has taken steps to investigate the allegations and take action against the hospitals found guilty of fraud. The state government has also advised patients to be cautious when seeking treatment under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme and to verify their hospital records to ensure that they are accurate.

The alleged fraud has significant implications for the healthcare system in Madhya Pradesh, highlighting the need for greater transparency and accountability in the implementation of government-funded health insurance schemes.

In conclusion, the allegations of fraud under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme in Bhopal are a serious concern that requires immediate attention from the government and healthcare authorities. The need for stricter regulations and greater transparency in the implementation of the scheme is essential to prevent such malpractices and ensure that patients receive accurate and affordable healthcare.
