Maharashtra Aligns Labour Laws With Centre's Codes

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed the state's Labour Department to align its laws with the Centre's new labour codes, ensuring that the interests of workers are at the forefront. This directive was given during a review meeting at the Chief Minister's official residence, Varsha, on Monday.

The meeting, attended by Labour Minister Adv. Akash Fundkar and Minister of State for Labour Adv. Ashish Jaiswal, aimed to discuss the proposed labour law reforms. Fadnavis emphasized the need for careful examination of every amendment before finalization.

One of the key proposals under consideration is the shift of jurisdiction from Labour Courts to the Chief Judicial Magistrate. The Chief Minister has sought a district-wise report on pending labour-related cases to assess the feasibility of this move. He also directed officials to ensure that the revised framework does not overburden Chief Judicial Magistrates.

Fadnavis has instructed the department to prevent dual membership of workers in the Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board and the Mathadi Boards. This is part of the proposed amendments to the Maharashtra Mathadi, Hamal and Other Manual Workers (Regulation of Employment and Welfare) Act, 1969.

The Chief Minister has also directed officials to formulate welfare schemes for all categories of unorganised workers, including domestic workers, in line with the provisions of the new Central labour laws. The proposed amendments aim to bring the state's labour laws in line with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Centre's four new labour codes.
