Migrant Worker Found Hanging in Ahmedabad Police Station

A 39-year-old migrant worker, Raju Jatav, was found hanging inside an electric room at the Shaherkotda police station in Ahmedabad on Tuesday morning.

Jatav, a resident of Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh, had approached the police at Ahmedabad's Asarwa railway station seeking help after being unable to return to his native place.

He had called the police control room at around 3:48 a.m. on September 14, stating that he was being harassed.

A PCR-35 van from Shaherkotda police station was sent to the location, and Jatav was brought to the police station at his request.

During questioning, Jatav told the police that he had been working as a labourer at Moti Khavdi in Jamnagar for around three months and had left to return to his native place in Uttar Pradesh.

He had got down at Asarwa railway station before contacting the police and appeared to be under considerable stress.

Jatav was counselled and allowed to speak to a relative over his mobile phone, who assured him that money would be transferred online in the morning for his travel.

As it was raining and Jatav did not have a place to stay, he told the police that he wanted to remain at the station until the money arrived and then take a morning train to his native place.

He was seated in the waiting area, and an entry was made in the station diary.

The police stated that Jatav did not disclose the specific reason for his distress and did not want any action to be taken at that point.

DCP (Zone-3) Rupal Solanki said that Jatav was not in police custody and had not been detained in connection with any offence.

She stated that Jatav had told the police that he wanted to go to Uttar Pradesh and had contacted his family, who assured him that money would be sent in the morning.

The police discovered Jatav's body after the officer on duty completed the shift at around 8:30 a.m., when the door of the electric room was found locked from inside.

Attempts to open it and repeated knocking received no response, and the police found Jatav hanging from a fan through a slightly open window.

The police have registered an accidental death case, and the investigation is ongoing.

This incident highlights the struggles faced by migrant workers in the country, who often find themselves in distressing situations due to various reasons, including financial difficulties and lack of support.

The incident also raises questions about the support systems in place for migrant workers and the need for more effective measures to address their concerns.
