Tribals Protest Ken-Betwa Project

A hunger strike by protesters opposing the Ken-Betwa Link Project has entered its tenth day in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh. The protest, led by social activist Amit Bhatnagar, is being held under the banner of Jai Kisan Sangathan and focuses on the demands of people affected by the project.

The protesters claim that Bhatnagar's health has deteriorated and he has lost around 6 kg of weight during the strike. They are demanding proper rehabilitation, transparent surveys, gram sabha meetings, public hearings, and resolution of objections for the past four years, but their concerns have not been addressed.

The protesters alleged that many eligible families have not received adequate compensation, while some ineligible people were given higher amounts. They also accused officials of corruption in the rehabilitation process and claimed that compensation money had reached middlemen's accounts.

The key demands of the protesters include providing three acres of land to every displaced family, extending the cut-off date to 2026, a high-level inquiry into alleged corruption in the projects, and a public discussion on the benefits and losses of the Ken-Betwa Link Project.

The protest has gained attention from local leaders, with the Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Umang Singhar, stating that the administration has been assuring people but not fulfilling their demands. The protesters have been staging demonstrations, including placing themselves in knee-deep water, to draw attention to their cause.

The Ken-Betwa Link Project aims to link the Ken and Betwa rivers in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. However, the project has been met with resistance from local communities, who are concerned about the impact on their livelihoods and the environment.

The protest highlights the concerns of marginalized communities and the need for proper rehabilitation and compensation. The government has been accused of ignoring the concerns of the affected people and pushing ahead with the project without proper consultation.

The situation remains tense, with the protesters determined to continue their strike until their demands are met. The government has been urged to address the concerns of the affected people and ensure that their rights are protected.

The Ken-Betwa Link Project is a significant infrastructure project that aims to improve irrigation and drinking water supply in the region. However, the project has been marred by controversy and resistance from local communities. The protest highlights the need for proper consultation and rehabilitation of affected people in infrastructure projects.

In conclusion, the protest against the Ken-Betwa Link Project highlights the concerns of marginalized communities and the need for proper rehabilitation and compensation. The government must address the concerns of the affected people and ensure that their rights are protected.
