Laser Beam Hits Malaysia Airlines Cockpit Near Kolkata Airport

A Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kolkata faced a disruption during landing after a laser beam hit the cockpit, momentarily disorienting the pilot.

The incident occurred on Saturday at around 11.20 pm when the flight, carrying 159 passengers, was approaching the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

The pilot reported noticing a bright laser beam flashing towards the cockpit from the Madhyamgram-Barasat side, approximately eight nautical miles from the runway.

The sudden laser flash affected the pilot's vision, causing a delay in landing. The aircraft had to circle in the sky before making another approach and finally landed safely at around 11.25 pm.

All passengers and crew members were reported safe.

The airline informed the airport authorities, who lodged a complaint with the NSCBI Airport Police Station.

Kolkata airport director Vikram Singh stated that the use of laser lights around the airport is prohibited, but such incidents occur occasionally and can potentially affect aircraft operations.

The matter has been brought to the notice of police authorities, who are investigating the case.

Pilots have previously complained about laser beams affecting their vision during take-off and landing on earlier occasions as well.

In 2025, laser lights used near the Sreebhumi Sporting Club pandal during the Durga puja festival reportedly caused concern among pilots, following which the laser show was stopped.

Intense laser beams can temporarily impair a pilot's vision, causing distraction and even temporary blindness-like effects, posing a risk during the critical stages of take-off and landing.

The incident highlights the need for stricter enforcement of regulations prohibiting the use of laser lights around airports.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities are working to prevent such incidents in the future.
