Mumbai Cha Raja Showcases Maharashtra's Saint Tradition

The Lalbaug Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal in Parel, Mumbai, has unveiled its theme for the upcoming 99th annual Ganesh festival.

The theme, 'Vaishnavanchi Wari', will showcase Maharashtra's rich saint tradition, highlighting the teachings of revered saints such as Dnyaneshwar, Tukaram, and Eknath.

The Mandal, popularly known as Mumbai Cha Raja and the Ganesh Gully pandal, was started in 1928 by textile mill workers in the Girangaon area.

The area, also known as the 'land of looms', is home to several prominent Ganpati pandals, including Lalbaug Cha Raja.

According to Swapnil Parab, secretary of the Mandal, the theme was chosen to highlight the influence of Maharashtra's saints on the state's social and religious traditions.

The Warkari tradition, which emphasizes austere and moral living, public service, and devotion to Lord Vitthal, will take center stage in this year's celebrations.

The Lalbaug Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal was established in 1928, inspired by the call of freedom movement leader Lokmanya Tilak.

Tilak had envisioned the public celebration of Ganeshotsav as a platform to mobilize people against colonial rule and foster social unity.

In 1938, the festival was shifted to Ganesh Galli, and in 1950, the Mandal was officially registered.
