Bhopal's Bhoj Wetland Survey Reveals Water Beyond Old Markers

A recent survey of Bhopal's Bhoj Wetland, directed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), has raised several concerns about the site's condition. On the fourth day of the survey, officials found that water had extended beyond the old boundary markers, with construction and soil filling observed in the catchment area.

The survey team, comprising officials from various departments, used drone mapping and ground-truthing to cover around 80% of the Ramsar site and adjoining areas.

The team began the day with a drone survey over Mugaliya Chhap, followed by physical and technical inspections at several locations, including Central Park Colony and Bishankhedi Road.

At Central Park Colony, officials found that water had spread nearly 15 feet beyond the old boundary markers, indicating a possible change in the lake's limit.

The team also observed large houses and private constructions inside Central Park and near Suraj Nagar, which may have been built on filled-up soil.

A sewage line running through the wetland was found submerged in water, prompting concerns about lake pollution and public health.

Additionally, large-scale dumping and soil filling were observed near the Bishankhedi lake area, which could obstruct natural water flow or affect water quality.

The team also identified a permanent structure within the 50-metre restricted zone of the lake, which will be verified through revenue and technical records.

The survey's findings will be used to assess the condition of the Bhoj Wetland and identify areas for improvement.
