MP Farmer Grows Maize Plant with 28 Cobs

A rare agricultural phenomenon has been discovered in Chirakhan village, 35 km from Sardarpur tehsil headquarters in Madhya Pradesh. Farmer Ashok Kumar Jaiswal found one of his maize plants bearing 28 cobs, a sight he has never seen in his 25 years of farming.

The plant is part of a batch of around 400 maize plants Jaiswal had planted in his 100-by-60-yard yard. While checking on the crop, he noticed one plant with an unusually large cluster of cobs, resembling a bunch of bananas. On counting, he found 28 cobs growing on the single stalk.

News of the discovery spread quickly through Chirakhan and nearby villages, with farmers and residents now visiting daily to see the plant for themselves. Dhar district agricultural scientist Dhan Singh Mandloi expressed surprise at the yield, stating that no maize variety in India has ever recorded such a yield on a single plant.

Mandloi noted that a similar case in the United States, involving 20 to 22 cobs on one plant, had reportedly been recognised in the Guinness Book of Records decades ago, a mark this plant appears to have exceeded. He said that with only one such plant among 400, identifying a scientific cause would be challenging even with lab testing.

Mandloi plans to consult senior experts in Delhi and visit the site personally. He has advised Jaiswal to support the plant with bamboo until researchers examine it. The discovery has generated significant interest among farmers and agricultural experts, who are eager to understand the reasons behind this rare phenomenon.

The maize plant has become a local attraction, with people visiting from surrounding areas to see the unusual sight. Jaiswal's farm has become a hub of activity, with visitors taking photos and marveling at the plant's unique feature.

The incident highlights the complexities of agricultural science, where unexpected phenomena can occur despite advances in technology and research. It also underscores the importance of continued research and experimentation in agriculture to understand and explain such rare events.

In conclusion, the discovery of a maize plant with 28 cobs in Madhya Pradesh is a significant event that has generated interest and surprise among farmers and agricultural experts. As researchers investigate the cause of this phenomenon, it remains to be seen whether this unusual plant will lead to new discoveries or insights in the field of agriculture.
