Forest Department Seizes Tempo With Khair Timber In Virar

The Forest Department successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle khair timber in the Medhe area of Virar East on Monday. A tempo carrying vegetables was used to conceal the timber, but officials from the Bhatane Forest Range intercepted the vehicle after receiving a tip-off.

The operation was carried out in the pre-dawn hours, and the tempo was seized along with the smuggled timber. However, the driver managed to escape under the cover of darkness. The Forest Department had set up a special checkpoint in the area after receiving confidential information about the illegal transportation of khair timber.

When the tempo was signalled to stop, the driver ignored the instructions and sped away, prompting a chase by the Forest Department team. The vehicle was pursued for nearly 7 to 8 kilometres before it was finally stopped. The driver fled the scene, but the tempo and the timber were seized.

Upon inspection, officials found that the upper section of the vehicle was loaded with vegetables, while 77 logs of khair timber were hidden underneath. The seized timber measured a total volume of 1.284 cubic metres and is estimated to be worth ₹14,892.

The Forest Department has initiated legal proceedings against those involved in the smuggling operation and has launched a search operation to trace the absconding driver. The tempo used for the alleged smuggling operation was also confiscated.
