BMC Introduces New Manhole Guard After Fatal Accident

A new safety measure has been introduced by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to prevent accidents during manhole maintenance works. The square-shaped Manhole Rail Guard prototype is designed to enhance safety for both citizens and civic workers.

The decision to introduce this new safety measure comes after a fatal accident in Sakinaka, where a 55-year-old man fell into an open manhole and died. The incident occurred on July 2, amid heavy rains, when the victim lost his balance and fell into the manhole while speaking on his mobile phone.

Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar reviewed the Manhole Rail Guard prototype and suggested modifications. The prototype will be tested on a pilot basis in Mumbai's L Ward, specifically in the Kurla area. The BMC plans to introduce the prototype at locations requiring manhole repair works in Kurla and Sakinaka.

The Manhole Rail Guard has a robust yet compact design, measuring 1 metre in height and 1.5 metres in length and width. It will be available in two variants, weighing 225 kg and 80 kg, to suit different operational requirements. The BMC also plans to add reflective strips or flashing lights to the guard for better visibility during night-time works.

The civic administration will finalize the design and specifications of the Manhole Rail Guard based on its on-ground performance, technical requirements, and feedback from civic staff and citizens. The BMC will then decide on its wider implementation across all administrative wards in Mumbai.

In addition to introducing the new safety measure, the BMC has also launched a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot for reporting open, damaged, or missing manhole covers. Citizens can report any issues by sending a message to 9324500600.

The BMC maintains over one lakh manholes across Mumbai, including nearly 80,000 under its Sewerage Operations Department. According to civic records, 96,383 manholes have been fitted with protective safety nets. The BMC is also working to restore manhole covers and safety nets at locations where they were buried or removed during earlier road works and infrastructure projects.

The introduction of the Manhole Rail Guard is a significant step towards enhancing safety in Mumbai. The BMC's efforts to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of citizens and civic workers are commendable. As the city continues to grow and develop, it is essential to prioritize safety measures to prevent such tragic incidents.

The success of the Manhole Rail Guard prototype will be crucial in determining its wider implementation across Mumbai. If successful, it could become a standard safety measure for manhole maintenance works, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring a safer environment for citizens and civic workers.

In conclusion, the BMC's introduction of the Manhole Rail Guard prototype is a positive step towards enhancing safety in Mumbai. The civic administration's efforts to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of citizens and civic workers are essential for creating a safer and more livable city.
