Ransai Dam Overflows, Water Cuts Lifted in Uran

A significant development has taken place in Navi Mumbai, where the Ransai Dam overflowed around 1 am on Sunday, following five days of intense rainfall. The dam, which supplies water to 25 gram panchayats, Uran town, and nearby industrial areas, had been facing low storage levels due to an unusually dry June.

The overflow has prompted the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to withdraw all water supply restrictions imposed in the region. Deputy Engineer Tanaji Kamble of MIDC's Uran Division stated that the complete withdrawal of water cuts has brought much-needed relief to residents. However, despite the recent improvement, residents continue to demand an increase in the dam's storage capacity, as Uran requires approximately 41 million litres of water per day, while the existing system can supply only about 30 million litres daily.

In related news, the Barvi Dam in Thane district, another major drinking water source, also recorded a sharp rise in storage after two consecutive days of heavy rain. As of Monday morning, the reservoir had reached 30.06% of its capacity, up by nearly four percentage points in a single day. The live storage stood at 101.88 million cubic metres, with the water level touching 60.18 metres. The Barvi catchment received significant rainfall on July 4 and 5, taking the season's cumulative rainfall to 628 mm.

Although storage levels have improved considerably since the onset of heavy rainfall in July, they remain well below last year's levels. On July 6, 2025, Barvi Dam had already reached 63.53% storage, highlighting the impact of this year's delayed monsoon despite the recent recovery. The rise in water levels is expected to bring relief to residents and industries in the region.

The lifting of water cuts in Uran and the increase in storage levels at Barvi Dam are significant developments, especially considering the water shortages faced by the region in recent months. As the monsoon season continues, it is essential to monitor the water levels and storage capacities of these dams to ensure a steady supply of water to the affected areas.

In the coming days, officials will continue to monitor the situation and make necessary adjustments to ensure that the water supply meets the demands of the region. With the monsoon season expected to continue, residents can expect some relief from the water shortages, but it is crucial to address the long-term issues of storage capacity and water supply to prevent similar shortages in the future.
