DoT Disconnects 88 Lakh Suspicious Mobile Connections

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has successfully disconnected 88 lakh suspicious mobile connections using an artificial intelligence and big data analytics tool. This move is part of the government's efforts to tackle cyber frauds.

The tool, known as ASTR, was developed by DoT to identify and disconnect mobile connections that failed reverification. According to Union MoS Communications and Rural Development Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, the ASTR tool has been effective in identifying and disconnecting suspicious mobile connections.

The Chakshu facility of Sanchar Saathi has also played a crucial role in enabling citizens to report suspected fraud communications. As of July 15, 2026, around 50.90 lakh mobile connections had been disconnected based on 11.18 lakh crowd-sourced reports submitted through the Chakshu facility.

The DoT uses crowd-sourced data for analysis rather than acting on individual submissions. This approach has helped the government to target the misuse of telecom resources effectively. The Ministry of Communications has stated that the DoT has developed a Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) for bi-directional information sharing with stakeholders, including the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The DIP platform is designed to prevent the misuse of telecom resources for cyber-crimes and financial frauds. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has issued advisories to its regulated entities to onboard the DIP platform for information sharing. So far, more than 50 regulated entities of SEBI have been onboarded on the DIP platform.

The National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC), implemented by CERT-In, examines cyberspace to detect cyber security threats and shares information with concerned organizations, state governments, and stakeholder agencies for taking action.
