FSSAI Penalises Fortune Oil Maker For Substandard Product

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has imposed a penalty on AWL Agri Business Ltd, the manufacturer of Fortune oil, for producing and selling substandard fortified sunflower cooking oil.

The action was taken after a sample of Fortune 'Fryola' refined sunflower seed oil collected from Goa failed laboratory testing, with Vitamin D levels significantly below the prescribed limits.

The FSSAI issued a Prohibition Order to M/s PIE FOODS and an Adjudication Order against M/s AWL Agri Business Limited, citing serious violations of food safety and regulatory requirements.

AWL Agri Business Ltd, based in Ahmedabad, sells edible oils under the 'Fortune' brand. The company's product, Fortune 'Fryola' refined sunflower seed oil, was found to have Vitamin A and Vitamin D levels below the prescribed limits, making it substandard under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

The sample was initially tested by the primary food laboratory, and the results were confirmed by a referral laboratory after the company appealed. The Central Licensing Authority then granted sanction for prosecution, leading to the adjudication application.

The Adjudicating Officer in Goa passed the adjudication order, imposing a penalty on AWL Agri Business Ltd for manufacturing and marketing a substandard fortified edible oil. However, the amount of the penalty was not disclosed by the FSSAI.

In recent months, the FSSAI has taken strict action against Food Business Operators (FBOs) and e-commerce platforms for violating its laws and rules. The regulator has also targeted energy drink and alcoholic beverage manufacturers.
