AIIMS Guwahati Launches Cardiac Surgery Programme

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Guwahati has successfully launched its cardiac surgery programme by performing two open-heart surgeries in a single day.

The surgeries were conducted on a 7-year-old child and a 47-year-old woman from Assam, both of whom were suffering from congenital heart defects.

According to an official release, the surgeries were performed under the leadership of Professor Colonel Dr Ashok Puranik, Executive Director of AIIMS Guwahati, on September 8.

The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, led by Prof Vineet Mahajan, played a crucial role in making this initiative possible.

Both patients were treated under the AIIMS initiative that supports the establishment of the Cardiac Surgery Programme.

The surgeries were performed using a heart-lung machine, which temporarily takes over the functions of the heart and lungs during open-heart surgery.

This milestone marks a significant development in the healthcare journey of Assam, providing advanced cardiac surgical care to the people of the Northeast and adjoining states.

The institute plans to expand the programme to include coronary artery bypass surgery and other advanced cardiac surgical procedures in the near future.
