FDA Cracks Down On 32 Medical Stores In Bhopal

In a major crackdown, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, conducted surprise inspections of medical stores across the city on Tuesday. The inspections revealed irregularities and deficiencies in 32 establishments, leading to strict action against them. The most significant actions taken include the suspension of licences of three medical stores and the cancellation of registrations of eight stores.

The FDA inspections found that several medical stores were operating without pharmacists and selling Schedule H drugs without a doctor's prescription. Dr Manish Sharma, Bhopal Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) and deputy director, Food and Drug Administration, stated that under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, Schedule H drugs can only be sold against the prescription of a registered medical practitioner.

The inspections led to the cancellation of licences of specific medical stores, including Shobha Medical and Tirupati Medical Store, which were found selling medicines without a pharmacist. Similarly, the licence of Shriram Traders was cancelled for selling Schedule H1 drugs without a doctor's prescription. These stores have been barred from selling medicines, and show-cause notices were issued to 21 other medical stores.

The FDA's action is being taken under Rules 65(iii), 65(iv), and 65(vi) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, which regulate the sale of drugs and cosmetics. The move aims to ensure that medical stores operate within the legal framework and provide safe and authentic medicines to consumers.

The crackdown is expected to have a significant impact on the city's healthcare sector, as it will help prevent the sale of spurious and unapproved drugs. The FDA's action will also ensure that medical stores maintain the required standards and follow the rules and regulations governing the pharmaceutical industry.

In the coming days, the FDA is likely to continue its inspections and take action against any medical stores found violating the rules. The authorities may also conduct awareness programs to educate medical store owners about the importance of complying with the regulations. As the city's healthcare sector continues to evolve, the FDA's efforts to regulate medical stores will play a crucial role in maintaining public health and safety.

The action taken by the FDA serves as a reminder to medical store owners to adhere to the rules and regulations governing their operations. The cancellation of licences and registrations of non-compliant stores will help maintain the integrity of the pharmaceutical industry and protect consumers from unauthorized and unsafe drugs.

In conclusion, the FDA's crackdown on medical stores in Bhopal is a significant step towards ensuring public health and safety. The action taken against non-compliant stores will help prevent the sale of spurious and unapproved drugs, and the awareness programs will educate medical store owners about the importance of complying with the regulations. As the city's healthcare sector continues to grow, the FDA's efforts to regulate medical stores will remain crucial in maintaining public trust and confidence in the pharmaceutical industry.
