Bhopal Municipal Corporation To Shut 130 Properties

The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to shut down around 130 properties in residential areas due to commercial activities. This move comes after the Supreme Court's order to continue enforcement against establishments violating land-use and occupancy norms.

The BMC had issued 8,264 notices to properties engaging in commercial activities in residential areas. Despite this, many establishments continued to operate, prompting the BMC to take further action. On Sunday, final 24-hour notices were served to these properties, warning them of shutdown action if commercial operations continue.

Around 150 BMC employees will be deployed across six constituencies to carry out the shutdown action. They will be assisted by police personnel from 11 police stations, with nearly 200 police personnel expected to be involved. The first phase of the action will target hotels, restaurants, gyms, factories, godowns, pubs and bars, marriage halls, and showrooms operating in residential areas.

Anand Soni, president of the 10 Number Traders' Federation, stated that traders would voluntarily keep their establishments closed but would protest if civic teams take shutdown action despite compliance. This comes after the BMC's earlier compliance report claimed nearly 100 establishments had been closed, though only two were actually sealed.

The BMC's building permission department has instructed officials to use the term 'shut down' instead of 'seal' to avoid confusion. Residents have alleged that the corporation may again count voluntary closures as enforcement action in its next compliance report.

BMC deputy commissioner Bhuvan Gupta said operators were first given 10 days to rectify violations. As they failed to do so, 24-hour notices were issued, and action will follow if commercial activity continues after the deadline.
