El Nino Hits India's Hydropower Generation

India's hydropower generation has seen its steepest drop since February 2024, primarily due to the El Nino phenomenon. The India Meteorological Department reported that the country's cumulative rainfall was 38% below normal until July 1.

This significant shortfall in rainfall is largely attributed to the development of El Nino conditions over the Pacific Ocean. El Nino has affected the southwest monsoon, which typically runs from June to September, leading to a substantial decrease in hydropower generation.

According to experts, the El Nino conditions have disrupted the normal pattern of the southwest monsoon. As a result, several regions in the country have experienced deficient rainfall, impacting the water levels in reservoirs and ultimately affecting hydropower generation.

The decrease in hydropower generation is expected to have a significant impact on the country's energy sector. With hydropower being a crucial source of renewable energy, the shortfall may lead to increased reliance on other sources of energy, such as thermal power. This, in turn, could lead to higher greenhouse gas emissions and increased energy costs.

The El Nino phenomenon is expected to continue until the end of the year, which may further exacerbate the situation. As a result, the government and energy sector stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation and exploring alternative solutions to mitigate the impact of the El Nino-induced shortfall in hydropower generation.

In the coming months, the country may witness a surge in energy demand, particularly during the summer season. The El Nino-induced shortfall in hydropower generation may lead to increased power cuts and higher energy costs, affecting both residential and industrial consumers. The government is likely to take measures to address the situation, including increasing power generation from other sources and implementing energy conservation measures.
