NFR GM Inspects Jiribam-Imphal Railway Project

Northeast Frontier Railway (Construction) General Manager Ashish Bansal recently conducted an inspection of key sections of the Jiribam – Imphal New Line Railway Project. The project, which spans 110.625 km, aims to provide direct rail connectivity to Imphal, the capital of Manipur.

During the inspection, Bansal reviewed the progress of ongoing construction activities and assessed the status of important railway infrastructure works along the project alignment. He also inspected the Khongsang–Awangkhul section, including the yards, with a focus on preparedness for the upcoming CRS inspection in October 2026.

The Jiribam – Imphal New Line Project is one of the most challenging railway infrastructure projects in the Northeast, traversing difficult and hilly terrain. The project involves extensive tunnelling and bridge construction, with 54 tunnels and 131 bridges, including the tallest bridge at Noney with a pier height of 141 meters.

The construction of these tunnels and bridges requires advanced techniques and stringent safety and quality measures. The project comprises 11 railway stations, which will provide improved rail access to the surrounding areas and serve as important points for passenger and goods movement.

The project is being executed in phases, with the Jiribam – Vangaichungpao section commissioned in February 2017 and the Vangaichungpao – Khongsang section commissioned in September 2022. The remaining sections are being progressed towards completion.
