SVKM To Keep Mumbai Sports Grounds Open To Public

Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM) has clarified its plans to develop three sports grounds in Mumbai, stating that the facilities will remain open to the public. The three properties, covering 14.11 acres, are located in Andheri, Juhu, and D.N. Nagar.

The trust has emphasized that it does not own the land, with ownership retained by the BMC or MHADA. SVKM will develop and operate the 11.57-acre Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Krida Sankul as a sports arena, featuring sports turf, athletics tracks, and other sporting amenities.

For the two smaller MHADA sites, SVKM will undertake maintenance and add facilities such as open gyms and grass turfs, while retaining their open-space and sports-related use. The trust's president, Amrishbhai Patel, stated that the entry fees and costs will be decided by the civic body.

The arrangements are for limited periods, and the authorities have retained ownership of the land. The MHADA sites were not allotted free of cost, and payments were made as required under the applicable rules. The Andheri sports complex was awarded through a competitive tender floated by BMC in September 2025.

SVKM offered the highest revenue share at 50% and plans to invest between 50 to 75 crores to build a world-class complex. The trust aims to create a sports ecosystem with proper trainers and coaches for various activities.

The clarification comes amid opposition from local residents and a public interest litigation (PIL) before the Bombay High Court over the proposed redevelopment of the three sites.
