Madurai Headmistress Booked For Abetment After Student Suicide

A government school headmistress in Madurai has been booked for abetment of suicide and under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act after a Class 11 student was found hanging at her residence. The incident occurred near Usilampatti, and the police registered the case based on a complaint filed by the victim's mother.

The student, a resident of Thottappanaickanur, had recently enrolled in a government school in Poochipatti but stopped attending classes. The school management then instructed her parents to collect her Transfer Certificate (TC) and enroll her elsewhere. The girl and her mother visited a government school in Usilampatti seeking a new admission.

During the inquiry, the mother stood before the headmistress with her arms folded, which the student reportedly found objectionable. The student intervened and pulled her mother's hands apart, following which the headmistress allegedly reprimanded the girl. The headmistress refused immediate admission, stating she would first inquire with the Poochipatti school regarding the reason for the TC issuance.

The next day, the student visited the Poochipatti school, collected her TC, and returned home. She was found hanging at her residence later that evening. The mother alleged in her police complaint that her daughter was driven to the extreme step due to the derogatory language used by the headmistress during the altercation.

The Usilampatti Taluk Police initially registered a case of suspicious death on August 25 but altered the charges after the victim's mother filed a formal complaint against the headmistress, identified as Vimaladevi. The police have initiated a probe and are conducting further investigations.

The SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act is a law enacted to prevent atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The law provides for severe punishments for those found guilty of committing atrocities against members of these communities.
