Vasai Police Seize Rs 2.06 Crore Ambergris, Arrest Four

The Vasai Police have cracked down on an interstate wildlife smuggling racket, seizing 2.058 kg of ambergris valued at Rs 2.06 crore. The operation was carried out on August 2, 2026, near G.G. College in Vasai.

The police received a tip-off about two men looking to sell ambergris, and a patrol team laid a trap to apprehend the suspects. During the search, officers found 2.058 kg of ambergris concealed in a black bag.

The two men initially arrested were identified as Anil Sunil Sawant, a resident of Golden Nest, Vasai, and Mehbub Hussain Qureshi, a resident of Bhayandar West. Further investigation led to the arrest of Vishal Santosh Thakare, a resident of Malegaon in Nashik district, and Ankit alias Krishna Pahadi, a resident of Kannad in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.

The accused allegedly procured the ambergris from Kerala and planned to sell it in Vasai. A case has been registered at the Vasai Police Station under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

The police are continuing their investigation to identify other members of the smuggling network. The operation was guided by senior police officials, including Police Commissioner Niket Kaushik and Additional Commissioner of Police Sachin Shinde.
