RIT Launches Global Scholar Quest in India

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has launched its inaugural Global Scholar Quest (GSQ) in India, aiming to deepen its engagement with the country. The initiative, which took place from May to August, provided an opportunity for Grade 11 and 12 students to work on real-world problems and develop solutions.

The programme culminated in a Grand Finale in Mumbai, where the winning team received access to a USD 50,000 RIT scholarship pool and a Rs 1 lakh cash prize. The competition featured 10 innovation tracks, including areas such as artificial intelligence, climate, and healthcare.

Students from International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, and Indian board schools were invited to participate in a four-level process designed to assess their problem-solving skills. The shortlisted participants received mentorship from industry specialists, including Dr M A Rehman, physicist at TIFR and founder of Creator International School.

The final-stage teams presented their concepts and prototypes before an RIT and industry jury, which assessed the entries based on originality, feasibility, and potential real-world impact. According to Kathleen B. Davis, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Associate Provost at RIT, the university sees GSQ as a way of engaging with students before they enter higher education and understanding their potential beyond conventional academic assessments.

Davis stated that GSQ allows the university to meet students earlier and see a different dimension of their potential, including their ability to deal with ambiguity, experiment, and turn curiosity into something tangible. Elizabeth Sullivan, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Marketing and Global Strategic Initiatives at RIT, emphasized that the university's India strategy is not limited to recruitment, but rather aims to build a deeper relationship and understanding with the country's education sector.

The university's delegation, led by senior enrollment and global strategy officials, also hosted an evening gathering in Mumbai with over 120 school principals, counsellors, and education leaders. The focus was on conversations around international education, student mobility, innovation, and collaboration between universities and educators.

The GSQ initiative is part of RIT's broader push to build long-term relationships with schools, counsellors, educators, and students in India. By engaging with students at an early stage, the university aims to foster a deeper understanding of their potential and provide opportunities for growth and development.
