CSMT-Sawantwadi Express Launched, Boosts Mumbai-Konkan Rail Connectivity

The Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde flagged off the new CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express on Thursday. This daily service will cover approximately 510 km, linking Mumbai to major towns in Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, providing an additional option for thousands of passengers traveling to the Konkan region.

The train will depart from CSMT at 11:55 pm and arrive at Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 pm the next day. On the return journey, it will leave Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 pm and reach CSMT at 6:40 am. The train will halt at significant stations, including Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Roha, Mangaon, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Rajapur Road, Kankavli, Sindhudurg, Kudal, and Sawantwadi Road.

According to Vaishnaw, the new service addresses a long-standing demand from people in Mumbai and Konkan, and the Railways are preparing for Ganesh Utsav by potentially increasing the number of special trains to over 370 if required. Goyal stated that the daily service would strengthen economic and social links between Mumbai and Konkan, benefiting students, workers, traders, and families.

The improved connectivity is expected to help local producers and fishermen transport goods to Mumbai faster, supporting tourism and employment in the region. The launch of the new train service comes as the Railways undertakes several capacity-enhancement projects in Mumbai, including works worth around ₹18,000 crore.

These projects include extending platforms for 15-coach suburban trains and upgrading signaling. Additionally, 238 AC local rakes have been sanctioned, with the delivery of the first rake expected to begin in 2027.
