Sumitra Mahajan: Indore Cannot Be Ignored

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has asserted that Indore, a city in Madhya Pradesh, cannot be ignored due to its consistent progress through the determination and active participation of its citizens.

Mahajan made this statement while addressing a panel discussion organised by Indore's think tank Abhyas Mandal on Thursday. The discussion was held amid growing concerns over the city's alleged neglect in terms of development.

Mahajan pointed out that Indore's growth can be attributed to the efforts of its citizens, citing key infrastructure projects such as the Narmada drinking water project, which was achieved after a sustained public struggle. She also highlighted several government-backed initiatives undertaken in the city, including the establishment of a super-speciality hospital and an international airport.

The former Lok Sabha Speaker maintained that while Indore cannot be described as neglected, it is true that the city is not witnessing well-planned and systematic development. She suggested that expert committees from different sectors should be constituted to prepare long-term development plans for the city.

Pithampur Audhyogik Sangathan president Gautam Kothari also spoke at the discussion, stating that although the industrial township has developed over the years, it has not achieved the level of growth that was expected. Architect Atul Seth stressed the need for greater public participation in preparing the city's master plan, pointing out that no report has yet been presented on the implementation status of the existing master plan.

Environmental concerns were also raised during the discussion, with environmentalist Dr OP Joshi expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of Indore's air quality, water resources, and green cover. Railway expert Nagesh Namjoshi urged stakeholders to focus on finding solutions instead of dwelling on perceptions of neglect.

In a related development, Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav has set a deadline for the Indore Municipal Corporation's digital portal.
