NMIA Launches International Flights

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has officially started its international operations with the first Air India Express flight to Abu Dhabi. This milestone makes Mumbai the first city in India to have two fully operational international airports, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The inaugural Air India Express flight IX-207 took off from NMIA at 2:55 am and landed in Abu Dhabi at 4:35 pm local time. The return flight from Abu Dhabi arrived at NMIA at 10:15 am. The aircraft was given a ceremonial water-cannon salute, marking the formal beginning of NMIA's international journey.

According to airline and airport sources, the incoming flight was fully booked, while the outbound return leg to Abu Dhabi had strong passenger loads. This new development is expected to reduce long transit times for residents of Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Pune, who will no longer have to travel to western Mumbai for international departures.

Passengers on the inaugural flight expressed their satisfaction with the new airport, citing its close connectivity and reduced travel time. One passenger from Raigad said that NMIA is better for them than CSMIA due to its proximity, allowing them to reach the airport in just 25 minutes.

The first international flight was operated by Air India Express's Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, registered as VT-RNT, bearing the initials of Ratan Naval Tata. This added a symbolic significance to the launch, given Mumbai's historical connection to India's aviation industry.
