Madhya Pradesh Trains See 55% Thefts Between Midnight and 9am

A study by the Madhya Pradesh Government Railway Police (GRP) has identified 11 trains passing through the state as hotspots for theft. The study, which analyzed data from 2022, 2023, and 2024, found that valuables stolen from AC coaches were worth more than those stolen from other coaches.

The study was conducted in the jurisdiction of two GRP police stations, Vidisha and Gwalior, and examined five key points: time, place, modus operandi, coach, and train. The findings revealed that between 12 midnight and 9 am, 55% to 65% of theft cases were reported in Vidisha, while in Gwalior, 40% to 45% of crimes occurred between 12 midnight and 6 am.

Five trains were identified as targets in Vidisha: the Bhopal-Bina MEMU, Bina-Bhopal MEMU, Rewanchal Express, Shreedham Express, and Bhopal Express. In Gwalior, the targeted trains were the Shreedham Express, Tamil Nadu Express, Mahakoshal Express, Dakshin Express, and Malwa Express.

The study also revealed that habitual offenders accounted for 9.2% of crimes, and that pickpocketing cases had increased in trains. The GRP has suggested strengthening the district cyber police's capacity and keeping tabs on old criminals.

To curb thefts, the GRP has been asked to prepare an action plan, which includes restricting the entry of outsiders and vendors, except coach attendants and pantry car employees, into AC coaches.
