Animal Matter To Me Transforms Rescue Across Maharashtra

A lifelong lesson in compassion from his mother inspired Malad resident Ganeshram Nayak to found Animal Matter To Me (AMTM) in 2010. His mother, now 76, has spent over four decades rescuing and caring for injured, abandoned, and abused animals.

Her philosophy had a lasting impact on Nayak, who was reminded that animals cannot speak for themselves and therefore humans must become their voice. This inspired him to start AMTM, an organisation committed to animal welfare.

What began as a modest 200-square-foot space for 15 rescued cats has grown into a full-fledged animal rescue and rehabilitation organisation. AMTM operates a 20,000-square-foot facility in Mumbai, including a 100-bed animal hospital, and has a fleet of seven ambulances responding to emergency rescue calls across Maharashtra.

The NGO works with local authorities to rescue and treat not only dogs and cats but also large animals. Animals that cannot be released back into their natural environment due to permanent disabilities or chronic medical conditions are rehabilitated at AMTM's 12-acre sanctuary in Kolad.

The sanctuary provides lifelong care to over 558 animals, including paralysed, amputee, and permanently disabled animals. In April 2026, AMTM inaugurated a state-of-the-art animal hospital at the Kolad centre, which provides medical care and serves as a veterinary training centre.

Vinita Bhatia, Editor of Campaign India, has witnessed AMTM's work firsthand, taking injured strays to the organisation for treatment and neutering. She notes that AMTM's efforts help reduce man-animal conflict by taking care of abandoned and injured strays and controlling the number of community animals through neutering.
