Bhopal Cab Drivers Strike Against Bike Taxis, Low Fares

Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, is witnessing a strike by online cab aggregators, including Ola and Uber, against bike taxis and lower fares. The strike, which started on August 18, is expected to conclude on August 20.

Passengers relying on these services for their daily commutes are facing difficulties as four-wheelers have mostly remained off the road. However, bike taxis continue to operate, unaffected by the strike.

To assess the situation, a team tried booking a cab from Ravindra Bhawan to Shri Ram Colony on Hoshangabad Road. While Ola did not accept the booking, an Uber driver eventually accepted the ride after a long wait. The fare for the 17 km distance was almost double the usual rate, showing Rs 552 instead of the usual Rs 190-230.

The Uber driver confirmed that a strike was indeed taking place and that drivers were puncturing the tyres of cabs that accepted rides. He offered to provide a private taxi service for the same amount if the ride was cancelled.

The strike is a result of the online cab aggregators' opposition to bike taxis and the lower fares that have been affecting their business. Local taxi unions are also staging protests, demanding regulation of online cab aggregators.

Union leader Salman Ali Khan stated that the drivers have two main demands: private bikes should not be used for taxi purposes without a commercial number, and the base fare should be fixed at Rs 80, with further rates in line with the government policy of Rs 25 per kilometre.

The strike has caused inconvenience to passengers, with many facing difficulties in finding alternative modes of transportation. The situation is expected to return to normal once the strike concludes on August 20.

The protest highlights the ongoing issues between online cab aggregators, local taxi unions, and bike taxis in Bhopal. The strike has brought attention to the need for regulation and fair pricing in the transportation sector.

The city's transportation system has been severely impacted, with many passengers relying on alternative modes of transport. The strike has also affected the livelihoods of drivers who are not participating in the protest.

As the strike continues, passengers are advised to explore alternative options for their daily commutes. The situation is expected to be resolved once the strike concludes and the transportation sector returns to normal.

In conclusion, the strike by online cab aggregators in Bhopal has caused significant inconvenience to passengers and has highlighted the need for regulation and fair pricing in the transportation sector. The situation is expected to return to normal once the strike concludes on August 20.
