DRI Busts Gold Smuggling Syndicate At Mumbai Airport

Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI) Airport was the site of a major gold smuggling bust on July 22, as officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested five individuals, including a passenger, cleaning staff, and coordinators.

The accused, identified as Mohamed Urwa, Rajesh Manjrekar, Zaheer Qureshi, Mohammad Ajhar Kazi, and Mohammed Ahmed, were part of a syndicate that would retrieve smuggled gold from the aircraft's lavatory and smuggle it out of the airport.

According to DRI officials, the syndicate's modus operandi involved a passenger concealing gold in the aircraft's lavatory, which would then be retrieved by private airport staff, including cleaning staff Rajesh Manjrekar and Zaheer Qureshi.

On July 22, DRI officers intercepted passenger Mohamed Urwa, who had arrived from Dubai, and observed the cleaning staff entering the flight after all passengers had deboarded. The staff were then seen exiting the flight and moving towards the tarmac, at which point they were intercepted by DRI officers.

During a personal search of Zaheer Qureshi, two pouches were recovered from his trouser pockets, which were found to contain gold dust in wax form valued at Rs 5.63 crore. Qureshi informed officers that he had been directed by Manjrekar to retrieve the pouches from the aircraft's lavatory.

Further investigation revealed that the cleaning staff had been working for monetary consideration, and that the smuggled gold was to be handed over to Mohammad Ajhar Kazi, who was waiting outside the airport. Ajhar was intercepted and informed officers that he was working on the direction of Mohammed Ahmed, who was also apprehended.

The DRI has recorded statements from all the accused, who have accepted their role in the smuggling operation and admitted to dealing with smuggled foreign-origin gold.
