Shakti On Wheels Brings Women SHG Products To Navi Mumbai

Shakti on Wheels, a mobile marketplace initiative, will arrive at Konkan Bhavan in Navi Mumbai on Monday, offering products made by women Self Help Groups (SHGs) from across Maharashtra to government employees and visitors.

The initiative, founded by retired IAS officer R. Vimala, was inaugurated by Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare on August 4. Within its first three days of operations, the mobile retail van recorded sales of more than Rs 30,000.

For Vimala, the early sales are not just about revenue, but about proving that the idea can create a sustainable market for women producers. She believes that the sales are a testament to the fact that people are willing to buy products made by women entrepreneurs.

The project involved considerable expenditure on the vehicle, fabrication, branding, staff, and operations. Vimala admits that there were moments when she questioned whether she had taken on too much soon after retirement. However, the initial response has strengthened her belief in the model.

Vimala is clear that Shakti on Wheels is not about asking people to buy products out of sympathy, but about offering high-quality products that can compete in the market. The mobile marketplace aims to provide a regular platform for women SHGs to sell their products, and the visit to Konkan Bhavan marks an important step towards developing a regular Navi Mumbai route.
