Irshalwadi Landslide: 53 Families Still Await Death Certificates

On July 19, 2023, a massive landslide struck Irshalwadi village in Khalapur taluka, Navi Mumbai, claiming 141 lives. Three years later, 53 families are still waiting for death certificates for their relatives whose bodies were never recovered.

The landslide, triggered by incessant rainfall, buried homes under tonnes of mud and debris, making rescue operations extremely challenging. Khalapur Tehsildar Abhay Chavan stated that the process for issuing death certificates for the missing victims is being expedited. So far, death certificates have been issued for 27 victims whose remains were identified.

The disaster affected 228 people from 41 families, with 219 residents of Irshalwadi and nine people from outside the village. Among the Irshalwadi residents, 27 were officially declared dead, 53 remain missing, and 139 survived. The tragedy left 22 children orphaned.

The Animal Husbandry Department reported that 111 livestock were affected, with nine animals dying, 20 going missing, and 83 surviving. Revenue officials assessed damage to 49 houses, with 32 completely destroyed and 17 partially damaged.
