Assam To Develop 11 Small Hydropower Projects

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state government will develop 11 small hydropower projects with a combined generation capacity of 137.2 MW. The projects will be developed at an estimated investment of Rs 2,617 crore.

The proposed projects are located in various districts, including Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, and will have a significant impact on the state's energy security. The government's approach towards hydropower development has changed, and Assam is now ready to tap even modest hydropower potential.

Sarma stated that the government has committed Rs 77,000 crore to become a power-surplus state. He emphasized that adequate and reliable power supply is essential for industrial growth, attracting investments, and supporting Assam's economic transformation. The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of industry, agricultural transformation, solutions to the flood problem, and modernized education for the state's growth.

Assam's power infrastructure has been under increasing pressure due to expanding urban centers, higher household consumption, and rapid industrial growth. To meet future energy requirements, the State Budget has proposed a Rs 77,353-crore investment roadmap covering hydropower, solar energy, thermal generation, and battery energy storage systems.

The plan includes the proposed 3,200 MW thermal power project at Bilasipara, expansion of renewable energy capacity, and several other hydropower projects across Assam. The government is also investing nearly Rs 4,000 crore in substations, transmission corridors, and modern distribution infrastructure to improve grid reliability and reduce outages.

The development of small hydropower projects is a significant step towards achieving the state's goal of becoming power-surplus. The government's focus on harnessing even the smallest hydropower potential will help strengthen energy security and support economic growth.

The proposed projects will be developed at various locations, including Karbi Langpi Middle-I, Karbi Langpi Middle-II, Dhansiri, Lungnit, Disaidam, Bordikorai, Amring, Jenum, Klarang, Desang, and Amphi. The government's investment in the power sector is expected to have a positive impact on the state's economy and industrial growth.

In conclusion, the development of small hydropower projects in Assam is a significant step towards achieving the state's goal of becoming power-surplus. The government's focus on energy security and economic growth is expected to have a positive impact on the state's development and industrial growth.

The announcement by the Chief Minister is a testament to the government's commitment to strengthening the state's power infrastructure and supporting economic growth. The development of small hydropower projects will help reduce the state's reliance on external power sources and improve energy security.

Overall, the development of small hydropower projects in Assam is a positive step towards achieving the state's goal of becoming power-surplus. The government's investment in the power sector is expected to have a significant impact on the state's economy and industrial growth.
