Maharashtra Gets ₹632 Crore UDAN Subsidy

Maharashtra has become the second-largest recipient of the Centre's UDAN subsidies, receiving over ₹632 crore in viability gap funding (VGF) to enhance air connectivity to its underserved and unserved regions. As of June 30, the state had received ₹632.29 crore in VGF disbursements, following Karnataka which received ₹823.73 crore.

The substantial allocation to Maharashtra highlights the need for significant investment to integrate key interior tier-2 and tier-3 locations into the national aviation network. The state aims to connect several underserved regions, including Nashik's Ozar, Sindhudurg's Chhipi, Jalgaon, Kolhapur, Solapur, and Amravati.

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the union government has developed and operationalised 95 airports, 17 heliports, and two water aerodromes under the UDAN framework. Additionally, 188 UDAN routes have been operationalised across the country over the last three financial years.

The modified UDAN scheme, recently launched by the ministry, aims to upgrade 100 unserved airstrips into full-fledged airports by 2036. The scheme also includes the construction of 200 modern helipads at an investment of ₹3,661 crore over eight years. Furthermore, the scheme will provide VGF support to airline operators worth ₹10,043 crore over 10 years.

The new scheme aims to connect 120 new destinations, serving 4 crore people over 10 years. The budget also includes funds for operations and maintenance support worth ₹2,577 crore for around 441 aerodromes, with three years of support and capped annual costs.

The emphasis on boosting connectivity in western, southern, and northern regional corridors is evident, with Uttar Pradesh earning over ₹523 crore, while Rajasthan and Gujarat earned over ₹282 crore and ₹220 crore, respectively.
