Landslide Hits Wayanad Tunnel Site, 5 Injured

A landslide occurred at the Kalladi tunnel project site in Wayanad, Kerala, on Tuesday, injuring 5 people. The incident happened when debris from an excavation at the site slid down and blocked nearby roads. The injured individuals have been taken to a local hospital for treatment.

According to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), the area received 265 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, which may have contributed to the landslide. Work at the site had already been stopped due to heavy rain.

Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan held an urgent meeting with ministers from the district and directed that rescue and relief operations be coordinated on a war footing. Ministers A P Anil Kumar and T Siddique have been instructed to proceed to Wayanad and oversee the rescue and relief operations.

The KSDMA reported that the debris from the excavation slid down and blocked nearby roads, hitting 5 people who were moving around the work site. Residents stated that large earth-moving machines will be required to remove the soil and start the search operation.

The incident occurred at the Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel project, which connects Malappuram and Wayanad districts. The project began last year, and work had been suspended since Monday due to heavy rain.

No fatalities have been reported so far, and the authorities are working to rescue anyone who may be trapped under the debris. Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on their way to the landslide site to assist with the rescue operation.

The Kerala government is closely monitoring the situation and has issued directions to coordinate rescue operations without delay. The Chief Minister's Office stated that Satheesan is keeping a close watch on the situation and has instructed the ministers to ensure that all necessary assistance is provided to those affected.

The rescue operation is currently underway, with the police and administration working together to search for anyone who may be trapped under the debris. The authorities are also working to clear the blocked roads and restore normalcy to the area.

The incident highlights the importance of being prepared for natural disasters, especially during the monsoon season. The Kerala government has been working to improve its disaster management capabilities, and the prompt response to the landslide is a testament to these efforts.

As the rescue operation continues, the authorities are urging people to exercise caution and avoid traveling to the affected area unless necessary. The Kerala government will provide updates on the situation as more information becomes available.

In the meantime, the people of Wayanad are coming together to support those affected by the landslide. Local residents are providing assistance to the rescue teams and helping to clear the debris. The community's response to the disaster is a testament to the resilience and solidarity of the people of Kerala.

The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, and the authorities will provide more information as the rescue operation progresses. For now, the focus is on rescuing anyone who may be trapped and providing assistance to those affected by the landslide.
