Madhya Pradesh Faces 3500 MW Electricity Shortage

Madhya Pradesh is facing a severe electricity shortage due to insufficient rainfall and maintenance issues at thermal power plants. The state currently needs 13,500 MW of power but can only generate 10,000 MW, resulting in a shortage of 3,500 MW.

This shortage has led to load shedding and power cuts in villages, particularly at night, affecting districts such as Rajgarh, Guna, Shivpuri, and others. Farmers are also impacted, as they rely on electricity to irrigate their fields.

According to officials, the problem has persisted for three days but showed improvement on Wednesday. The non-functioning of two power generation units in Singaji and Birsinghpur, as well as the stoppage of electricity generation at Indira Sagar, have contributed to the shortage.

Residents of Guna and Shivpuri have protested against the power cuts, and legislators have written to Energy Minister Pradhuman Singh Tomar to address the issue. The Managing Director of the MP Power Generation Company, Manjeet Singh, attributed the problem to maintenance issues at the power generation units.

However, with the resumption of operations at Singaji and one unit in Birsinghpur, and the expected start of another unit in Birsinghpur on Friday, the situation is expected to improve. The state's reliance on solar panels for daytime power supply has helped, but the lack of electricity at night remains a concern.

The insufficient rainfall may lead to power shortages not only this year but also in the coming year. The power department has been supplying electricity to farmers through a feeder during the day to help with irrigation.

The situation has sparked concerns among residents, farmers, and legislators, who are calling for a stable and reliable power supply. The state government will need to address the issue to prevent further disruptions and ensure that the power needs of its citizens are met.
