Venna River Bridge Collapses In Mahabaleshwar

A devastating bridge collapse occurred in Mahabaleshwar on Monday, as the Venna River Bridge gave way due to strong water flow, causing three vehicles to fall into the riverbed. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in the incident. The bridge, located near Venna Lake and leading towards Ri Jantha, was meant for light vehicles and was severely damaged in the collapse. The municipal administration quickly responded to the incident and used cranes to safely retrieve the vehicles from the river.

The incident is a result of the relentless rainfall that has been disrupting normal life in Mahabaleshwar for the past five to six days. The hill station has been experiencing intense rainfall, with no signs of relief, and has recorded an extraordinary 513 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mahabaleshwar has received 1,717.40 mm of rainfall since June 1, badly affecting both urban and rural areas.

The heavy rain has caused severe waterlogging across Mahabaleshwar, with roads near Venna Lake and other parts of the town submerged, making it difficult for motorists to travel. Traffic has slowed considerably near Bagicha Corner on the Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani road due to water accumulation on the road. Several roads have caved in, large trees have been uprooted, and mudslides and falling rocks have blocked ghat roads, disrupting transportation across the region.

The Ghavari-Yerane road in Mahabaleshwar taluka has been closed after a section of the road collapsed, and flooding in the Solshi River has completely cut off access to several villages, leaving residents isolated. The continuous rainfall has also disrupted electricity supply across the taluka, affecting water supply schemes in many villages and leaving residents without drinking water. Mobile and internet services have also been affected, making communication difficult during emergencies.

The prolonged rains have created major challenges for local residents, who have urged the administration to restore essential services such as electricity, water, and communication as soon as possible. While farmers initially welcomed the monsoon, the disruption of these services has made daily life increasingly difficult. The administration is working to restore these services and ensure the safety of the residents.

As the situation continues to worsen, the residents of Mahabaleshwar are bracing themselves for further disruptions. The administration has advised residents to stay indoors and avoid traveling unless necessary. The incident has highlighted the need for urgent attention to the infrastructure in the region, which has been severely affected by the heavy rainfall.

In the coming days, the administration is expected to take measures to restore the damaged infrastructure and ensure the safety of the residents. The residents of Mahabaleshwar are hoping for a relief from the heavy rainfall, which has caused widespread destruction and disruption in the region. The incident has also raised concerns about the preparedness of the administration to handle such situations, and the need for more effective measures to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall.

The collapse of the Venna River Bridge is a stark reminder of the devastating effects of heavy rainfall on the infrastructure and daily life of the people in Mahabaleshwar. As the region continues to experience heavy rainfall, the administration and residents are working together to minimize the damage and ensure the safety of everyone.
